The Clockmaker's Heart: vintage-inspired necklace with quartz crystal, old key and copper heart

A rusty old key holds a vintage copper-coated heart charm, and a dangling quartz crystal on a chain.
The key is old, possibly vintage (30 years old or older), of unknown provenance, though I like to think that it may have been the key to a grandfather clock. It has rusted to a patchy, dark brown, with steel showing through in places. I have sealed it with clear varnish to preserve its aged look and to prevent any rust or tarnish from rubbing off or spreading to your other jewellery.
The little vintage heart charm is from the 1960's-70's. It is made of acrylic and coated with copper, giving the effect of metal but with much less weight. There are a couple of spots where the copper coating has tarnished. (Clicking on the largest image will enable you to view the photographs at full size.)
The crystal drop is made of clear quartz, with a little cap that appears to be made of silver, and dangles from a fine, rope-style chain which is probably also silver. Quartz is the second most common mineral on earth, and it has been used for jewellery and carvings since antiquity. Inclusions in the mineral give it a huge variety of colours and patterns, but pure quartz is clear and transparent, as in this example. Since quartz has been used in clocks for almost a hundred years, it seemed fitting to include it in this necklace.
The chain is joined to the key by interlocking, antiqued-copper coloured rings. The chain is a Figaro style chain, which means that it has three short links followed by one longer link. The necklace fastens at the front with an antiqued (artificially aged), copper-plated toggle clasp with an old-fashioned design reminiscent of a pocketwatch's fob. Front-fastening necklaces are convenient if you have difficulty reaching behind your neck.

The necklace measures 50.5cm from end to end, including both parts of the toggle clasp. The old key measures 52mm from top to bottom, and 22mm across the bow. The copper heart charm measures 11mm across, and the crystal dangle is 17mm from top to bottom including its silver cap and baile (hanging loop).
To clean this necklace, wipe it carefully with a damp cloth.
