Felt Newsletter – Christmas 2009

It seems like hardly any time since I wrote the last Christmas newsletter! This year Felt is bigger, brighter and packed full of even more beautiful handmade things, with over 600 busy makers working away on their unique and original products. New Zealand is like one big Santa's workshop right now, right under our noses.

But it's not just crafters having a busy time of it - it's a crazy time of year for everyone else as well, so we've spent some time picking out gift ideas to make your Christmas shopping easier.

Presenting... The Felt Christmas Gift Guide

There's more showcases to browse in the Felt Christmas Gift Guide on the website, including Splendid spoils for super Secret Santas, featuring 100 gift ideas under $20, and for those people in your life who are impossible to buy for we've compiled Gifts with Quirk Factor, a list of items that you're unlikely to see in the malls.

Crafty Christmas shopping across the country

Christchurch and Wellington unite in an evening of crafty Christmas shopping on Thursday 3 December. At Our City O-Tautahi on the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace in central Christchurch, The Night Market comes to life at 6pm with 20 stalls full of handmade gorgeousness, while at the same time at TheNewDowse in Lower Hutt, Craft 2.0's Twilight Delight presents the best and brightest of Wellington's talented crafters for your Christmas shopping enjoyment.

Those of you in the north, don't despair - Auckland has its share of pre-Christmas fairs coming up with Devonport Craft Market at Windsor Reserve on Sunday 6 December, followed by the fabulous Crafternoon-Tea on Saturday 12 December and Love Handmade on Saturday 19 December. Crafty goodness three weeks in a row!

Stocking up for stockings...

If you're helping Santa out with filling stockings this year, Felt has all sorts of lovely handmade goodies to make Christmas morning special for your little (or not-so-little) ones. Click here for 50 fabulous Christmas stocking fillers.

A Handmade Christmas

There are heaps of good reasons to make an effort to buy handmade for Christmas - it strengthens communities, supports the local economy as well as local talent and with the growing trend of upcycling and repurposing, it's often an eco-friendly option.

It's been a fantastic year so far for craft in New Zealand, with heaps of new markets and loads of media coverage. I hope that support will continue to grow for all the amazing makers who are selling on Felt and at Craft 2.0 and other markets around the country. Thank you for your part in making it happen!
