Worldwide Knit in Public Day, Saturday 13 June

Knitters from all walks of life will be out in force around the country this Saturday, celebrating Worldwide Knit in Public Day.

Started in 2005 by Danielle Landes, WWKiP Day began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. It has grown to be the largest knitter-run event in the world, promoting knitting as a community activity in a very distinct way. Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers.

In 2005, there were 25 local events around the world. By 2007 there were almost 200. This year in New Zealand alone there are at least 8 events taking place this Saturday, so why not head along and check one out? Take along your needles and yarn, friends, family and knit-curious novices of your acquaintance and enjoy a day out knitting and nattering with like-minded crafters.

I know the Christchurch at the Dux De Lux is going to be huge, with heaps of activities, competitions and fun and games planned. I’ll be there with my crochet (not exactly knitting in public, but that’s merely a technicality!) and keen to see Amy break last year’s record number of attendees, so do come along.

I’d love to hear of any other events taking place for WWKiP this weekend – email me or leave a comment below.

  1. I ran a Knit In public place venue outside the Paper Plus shop in Gisborne. Also I had a display of my work in the library.
At the moment I am producing patterns for sale to be followed by a book and traveling to the States to teach design in knitwear, making garments fit the wearer.
I travel all over the states for this and Sydney in Australia. Teaching in New Zealand has been limited so far though I have taught many people one on one and have helped people all over the world on http://www.Allexperts.com, where I have been for 15 years.
Can we work together in some way?
