Nathan King first hit the headlines as the lead singer of Christchurch pop/rock band Zed whose first album "Silencer" debuted at number one on the New Zealand charts. Now pursuing a solo career, Nathan put down his guitar pick long enough to make some crafty picks on Felt...

Did you make stuff when you were a kid?
I was very into Lego as a kid - loved making all sorts of contraptions - most of which needed a little imagination to understand, but Mum was very good at humouring me as I explained the intricacies of my latest "space-transporter rocket-thing". Later on I guess I continued creating, less with Lego and more with music!

What's the best handmade thing you've ever been given?
When I was about six years old a cousin gave me a small handmade model boat made by a Greek fisherman who was 92 and didn't wear glasses! The attention to detail was amazing.

Have you ever worn something you've made on stage or in public?
No - I'm useless at making anything resembling stylish, so I wouldn't dare step onstage with something I'd made. Unless it was small, like a badge!

What was the last handmade item you bought?
All my guitars are handmade - the best sounding ones always are and there's something about the human touch with an instrument that is essential to its quality. I think you can apply that to most things.

Are crafty girls/boys hot?
My wife is very clever with crafts and she's very hot so the answer is definitely 'yes'.

Is it really the thought that counts or do you think people who make gifts are just cheap?
I think something handmade is better than something bought, personally. I have so much cheap disposable junk laying around that to get something that someone's put time and effort and imagination into is very cool. I have a friend, Sriwhana Spong who is a majorly talented artist - she's given me a gift or two she's made and I've still got 'em all, which is more than I can say for most other presents I've received.

Nathan's first solo album "The Crowd" is available now featuring the hits "Never Too Late" and "Saddest Thing". He recently toured with Duffy in NZ, and will soon release his third single off "The Crowd" entitled "Eyes For You".
