Described in Satellite Magazine as "one of the most beautiful singing voices to emerge from these shores", Hannah Curwood hails from Dunedin, where she recently recorded her soon-to-be-released second album, "The Blind Love E.P". She shared some of her thoughts on craft, and picked out some favourites on Felt.
Did you make stuff when you were a kid?
Every Christmas me and my best friend Nina would go on a crazy craft spree and make all of our family and friends things like candles (assorted crayon colours and mostly wonky), pot pourri (a refreshing mix of lavender, rose petals and whatever eau de toilette happened to be left out on Mum's dresser), Fimo jewellery (!!) and home baking. Nina was quite talented in the craft department and went on to become a gifted painter. Me? Well, let's just say I stick to music these days...
If you were a crafty superhero, what would your name and superpower be?
'Mac-neato' - I would have the ability to avert any tragedy, using the sublime power of my pasta art.
Do you think craft suffers from pre-conceived notions of lace covered coat hangers and toilet roll covers? If yes, any suggestions for how craft can improve its image?
I do think a lot of people picture glorious spray painted pine cone arrangements with eyes when they hear the word 'craft'. But I also think that's part of it's appeal. Craft is evocative of our childhood and a much more kinesthetic world. I have to admit though, whenever I think of craft I think of my friend's mum that used to make those creepy barbie doll toilet roll covers. Urgh!
Maybe the craft powers that be just need to come up with a new branding. Like: 'Craft. Because you care.' ha ha
If your music took physical shape what would it look like? What would it be made of?
Macaroni. Definitely macaroni.
What was the last handmade item you bought?
An amazing hand beaded head piece from a wonderful art deco store in Napier. Complete with black tassel and ostrich feathers. It's so feminine and unique, I love it.
Do you think people should make more stuff (...instead of buying it)?
YES!! But alas, I fear most of us don't have the skills/crafty education. I for one REALLY wish I could sew but the only thing I can do with a needle and thread is plait a horse (you sew the plaits up into those nifty little balls).
Is it really the thought that counts or do you think people who make gifts are just cheap?
It is such an amazing thing to be given a home made gift. The fact that someone has put all of that time aside just for you is so special. And you keep them forever!!!
Hannah's second release "The Blind Love E.P" will be hitting the shelves in July. In the meantime you can preview the first single "Blind Love" at www.myspace.com/hannahcurwood. You can also catch her playing around Auckland with her band and fellow songstress Rebekah Davies.
