Artist quality, handmade paint prepared from a New Zealand pigment. Oxford Grey is an earth pigment, hand-ground into powder and then made into paint using a traditional watercolour recipe consisting of gum arabic, honey, ox gall, oil of cloves as a preservative and distilled water. The paint is then placed in watercolour half-pans.

This pigment is clay based and has been used to make pottery, and when collected it was pale grey blue. This colour disappeared however as the clay dried, but unfortunately did not appear as 'blue' again when made into paint. It is a green tinged grey in watercolour, and a green when made into an oil paint. Many thanks to Brent Firkin of the Arts in Oxford Gallery for this pigment.

It is quite normal for some of these dried watercolour paints to crack in the pan. This is no way detracts from their use. The beauty of watercolour paint that has dried on the palette is that it can be reused by moistening at any time. (Tip: dried out tubes of watercolour paint can be cut open lengthwise and used in the same way as pan paints.)
