Handmade 2012, Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 June, Wellington

Handmade 2012 is fast approaching – just three sleeps to go before central Wellington becomes craft central for two fabulous days of workshops, masterclasses and lectures, as well the Meet the Makers party on Saturday night. And it’s not too late to nab tickets! Head over to the Handmade 2012 website and check out the programme.

As part of the Handmade lecture series I’ll be speaking on both Saturday and Sunday about the effect of the earthquakes on the Christchurch craft community, some creative responses to the aftermath of the quakes, the emergence of “quake craft” and my vision for the future of Christchurch craft. Sound like your cup of tea? I’d love to see you there!

There’s 80 different activities to choose from, creative folk converging from all over the country, a Knit Lounge that’s open to the public all weekend and even a Handmade store featuring heaps of gorgeous handmade products – what’s not to love? Come along for a class or two, or make a weekend of it and treat yourself to a Weekend Pass to really get those creative juices flowing. See you this Queen’s Birthday weekend at Handmade 2012!

From chocolate making, spinning, sewing and e-textiles to cultivating bonsai, upcycling, printmaking and bookbinding, there’s a massive selection of classes to choose from, and if you haven’t booked your tickets yet, you’d better get in quick – some sessions have sold out already!

And how’s this for cool? Even if you’re not attending a class or talk as part of the symposium, you can still grab a $30 ticket for the Meet the Makers & Pop Up Store Party at Te Papa from 6.30 till 7.30 on Saturday night to mingle with the speakers, makers and attendees of HANDMADE 2011. As well as refreshments (including wine and cheese, yum!), a selection of pop-up shops will provide the opportunity to nab some awesome products handmade by the experts presenting and teaching their crafts over the weekend. Summer Silver Retreat, 12–13 March, Hawke’s Bay

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

silverschool.felt.co.nz

Jewellery artists Charmayne Dobbs and Ingrid Schloemer invite you to attend their second Summer Silver Retreat in Haumoana, Hawke’s Bay on 12 and 13 March 2011. Over the two days, they’ll give tuition in the creation of silver jewellery using precious metal clay.

The cost of $275 includes tuition, use of tools, firing service and materials (10g silver plate + wire, 14g silver clay and two cubic zirkonias). Dinner will also be provided on the Saturday night, and drinks and nibbles will be supplied throughout the weekend.

This is a fabulous opportunity to learn traditional ways of working with metals: sawing, filing, soldering, wire work, using hammers and pliers – as well as learning to work with a new contemporary material, precious metal clay: shaping, sculpting, cutting, sanding, drilling, setting stones, polishing, and maybe create some filigree work.

Places are limited to 12 people, to allow Charmayne and Ingrid to work closely with each student. You will be working in a group of six with one of the artists, and swap the following day to learn with the other. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends, and I can personally vouch for it being a lot of fun!

A creative weekend in beautiful Hawke’s Bay would also make an amazing Christmas present for a crafty person – Ingrid will happily arrange for a printable voucher. Secure a place at the Summer Silver Retreat now!

This is the first reconstructed clothing workshop I have held, and fulfills part of a long term plan for my business, rethreads, which has been making and selling reconstructed clothing for the last couple of years. I am a fervent supporter of reducing the consumption of cheap new clothing, and of finding ways to remodel what we already have with ease and creativity. I am also passionate about strengthening connections in the local community, so am pleased to be offering this workshop for a donation, with support from St. Albans Community Center. All the information you need is listed below, there is no need to book in advance. However if you have any questions, you are welcome to email me: rethreads@clear.net.nz

About the Workshop:

Reconstruction, also known as upcycling, is the process of taking something (in this case, an item of clothing) and cutting and altering it to create something new. We’ll spend the afternoon remodelling your old, outdated clothing to come up with fresh new looks. Depending on your project and level of ability, you’ll make good headway or even finish your reconstruction project. We’ll also cover some of my favorite basic techniques, like making your own iron on patches, or blanket stitching to make a nice finish to a rough edge. I’ll bring some of my own stuff, and some books and web links for inspiration.

You’ll Need to Bring:

1. Some clothes you want to alter – bring a selection. Clothes that work best for reconstruction are simple in shape and design. T-shirts, men’s shirts, denim skirts, big wool jerseys, jeans.

2. Some fabric you may want to add to your clothes, or use to make patches.

3. Sewing equipment (scissors, needles and threads, pins etc), including a sewing machine or overlocker, if you have one. Most projects can be sewn by hand, if you have the patience!

About the Tutor:

I finished a Certificate in Craft Design in 1989, with a major in textiles, and have well over 30 years experience in reconstructing clothes. Rethreads makes the most of this and can be found here on Felt. I also have a lot of experience teaching successful and exciting workshops, to adults, children and families.
