Extra Curricular issue 11 – Starting over…

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Heads-up creative folk, because Extra Curricular issue eleven is on the horizon! The Autumn issue is out at Easter and, in keeping with the season’s theme of ‘new beginnings’ there’s a bit of a design refresh.

Extra Curricular is all about people getting creative in their spare time. Whether they have a nine to five job, a fledgling business or children to keep them busy, the folks profiled in Extra Curricular like to keep the right side of their brain busy in their off-hours.

The beautiful cover art this time is by Angela Keoghan.

Issue eleven is bursting at the seams with great content from the likes of Olivia Coote (with a housewarming gift tutorial), Martha Goes Green (with the story of a set of recipes for a sweet baby shower) and Sonya Nagels (who interviews recent returnees for Homecomings, looks at an amazing converted hotel in Raglan, and contributes more lovely illustrations).

Joanna Davies looks into what it takes to turn your hobby into a business (and speaks to Felt’s own founder, Lucy Arnold), Ike Levick interviews Pia Jane Bijkerk, Jenn Hadley photographs Olivia Neveu of Lucille and Kate van der Drift snaps Kelly O’Shea & co from Glue Gallery.

As if that wasn’t enough, Extra Curricular also visits Julia Atkinson of Studio Home and compiles the first in their new series of cheat-sheets – this one’s on promotion and marketing.

Printed in full colour with vegetable based inks on recycled stock, Extra Curricular is a pocket-sized treasure trove of inspiration. Order your copy now!

Fast and Light – Paul Garland

Paul Garland has done the hard yards to compile his book of tried and true tramping recipes – and he’s still walking the talk. This summer he’s indulging his passion for tramping by walking the Te Araroa trail, which runs 3,000 km down the length of New Zealand and includes many of our most beautiful wilderness areas.

In his pack is a copy of his book, Fast and Light, an easy to follow overview of tramping food options available in New Zealand. Packed with over 70 recipes, preparation advice, packaging suggestions and cooking instructions, Fast and Light contains 110 pages of great outdoor cooking information to help prepare tasty and nutritious meals while tramping the New Zealand wilderness. It’s designed to assist with fast, lightweight food options on extended and multi-day tramps, and to make food planning and menu selection more interesting.

Minestrone, featured in Fast and Light

Fast and Light is A5 sized (210mm x 148mm) for easy packing and spiral bound for culinary convenience, with front and back covers laminated to withstand the odd wipe down, as all well-used recipe books require from time to time. This is a great gift for trampers, campers and outdoor types.

Blendy Knits Again

Cover of Blendy Knits Again

Blendy Knits Again, and this time it’s not just socks!

Grab your needles and your favourite sock yarn, then ponder over which charming pattern to choose from the second book New Zealand knitting designer, Belinda Too (Blendy) has created.

Following on from the success of Blendy Knits Socks, this new book offers 25 patterns to suit just about everyone – cute hats, legwarmers for all ages, delightful fingerless gloves, lace scarves, socks (including larger sizes) and gorgeous cardigans.

The patterns are relatively easy – just clever placement of basic knitting stitches with a few modern twists. And they have been designed with yarn efficiency in mind – you know your project is complete when you have used up all your yarn.

And if you’re in Wellington or Auckland this weekend, you’re invited to Blendy’s book launch! Wellingtonians can head along to the Paramount Theatre on Friday 28 October from 4.30 till 8.30pm for book sales and signing, wool sales from Knitsch and HappyGoKnitty, and drinks at the bar.

Blendy will also be at Craft 2.0 on Saturday from 10am till 4pm in the Chaffers Dock Building Atrium, and then on Sunday, Auckland knitters can find her at Kraftbomb from 11am till 2pm at Grey Lynn Community Centre on Richmond Road.

Children’s book author Victoria Jones is passionate about teaching children literacy skills and uses child-friendly text, rhyming words and bright images to help children engage in learning.

Victoria’s latest cute and colourful book, Missy’s Birthday Surprise, teaches children how friendship and teamwork can help them to overcome their fears. Victoria’s other publications include Missy’s Dog Wash, which helps children learn about earning pocket money, and Creepy Crawlies, which contains facts about bugs and insects.
