Get well soon

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

We may not want to admit it’s here, but the season of snuffles is starting. While Felt can’t offer to cure the ills of your loved ones, we do have a lovely range of comforts to ease the suffering of weary bodies and sneezy noses.

There’s nothing like the kindness of a handmade pick-me-up to alleviate that cold-induced crankiness and those flu-y blues. (And hey, you can even get them sent direct to the sufferer so you won’t catch their bug – how cunning is that?)

Say thanks to your mum

Snuggle up!

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

If you’ve had your fill of hot cross buns, how about a hot snuggly bunny instead? These rice-filled hot bunny heat packs from Red Delicious are a pretty cute way to deal with chills and aches.

Each bunny is made from soft cream woollen blanketing, with cotton ear inners, felt face and a felt heart. Just put a hot bunny in the microwave for one minute… wait? WHAT!?!

Still catching the rays

We’ve been painting the house while the Autumn weather holds. Actually, we’ve been replacing rotten weatherboards, scraping, sanding and otherwise picking-at the house. It still feels like we’re a long way from actually painting, but that’s beside the point. The point is it’s hot. Damn hot.

It may be Autumn, and storms may be looming before the end of the week according to Metservice, but by golly I’m in need of my sunhat – and by the time we’re done with this malarky I’m going to be in need of a new sunhat. My current one is becoming the victim of paint chips and splots, wayward electric sanders and more sweat than you really want to know about.

I’ve got my eye on a few already, but the problem is going to be narrowing down my choice. It could be this one, from Lynsey Champion Hats. Good for tea in the garden or a day at the races, I reckon, though I can’t say I look nearly as elegant leaning against the weatherboards!

I’m also quite enamoured of this cheerful little number from Hats by Hilary. It looks cool, shady (shady in a good way, that is) and comfortable.

Or maybe I could go all funky with a fedora, for something completely different! Avoir‘s fedoras on Felt are unique and dashing, and I’m quite tickled by this one with a tiger tattoo.

There are plenty of hats for kids fluttering about on Felt too – I love this bloomin’ sunflower hat from Smallmoose, and there are many more bright and cheerful children’s chapeaux to choose from.

Anyway, enjoy the sun while it still shines – and don’t forget your hat!

Looking forward to the long weekend

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

With Easter on our minds, all sorts of things around here have been reminding us of the delights of the weekend to come…

Like these! Well, they’re not quite hot cross buns, but aren’t they pretty? We’re quite taken by these lovely crossed earrings from Relique, available in copper or silver.

And while we’re being a bit unconventional about Easter, take a look at this whimsical toddlers’ tee from The Pickle Jar. An adorable top for your little one, particularly if they can’t decide whether chicks or bunnies rule the Easter roost!

However you plan to spend your Easter, the team at Felt wishes you a lovely long (and hopefully relaxing) weekend.

Easter unwrapped

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Chocolate is nice…. chocolate is very nice. I’m sure all of us, except the certifiably insane, would agree.

Easter and chocolate are pretty entwined in the modern psyche. However, I must admit to feeling a little over Easter before it has even hit this year, and I know what’s doing it. It’s all those foil-wrapped goodies, lining up in their thousands in the big box retailers all over the country, garishly shouting “Buy me! I’m the biggest/sweetest/shiniest ever!”

If, like me, you’re starting to think you’d like an Easter that’s more about celebration than scoffing (not that I’m saying a bit of chocolate doesn’t have its place, mind you) and more about handmade beauty than mass-produced glitz, you might want to take a look at what we’ve found in the Felt Easter egg hunt…

Paisley Easter eggs by Peppery

Beautiful, original, handmade and local. We really couldn’t have hoped for nicer treasures. These exquisite decorative eggs from Peppery, and sweet little Easter magnets for hiding wee notes from Tinch are just some of the ways Felt can bring your Easter new life.

… and of course we found some bunnies too. You know we can’t resist them.

Extra Curricular issue 11 – Starting over…

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Heads-up creative folk, because Extra Curricular issue eleven is on the horizon! The Autumn issue is out at Easter and, in keeping with the season’s theme of ‘new beginnings’ there’s a bit of a design refresh.

Extra Curricular is all about people getting creative in their spare time. Whether they have a nine to five job, a fledgling business or children to keep them busy, the folks profiled in Extra Curricular like to keep the right side of their brain busy in their off-hours.

The beautiful cover art this time is by Angela Keoghan.

Issue eleven is bursting at the seams with great content from the likes of Olivia Coote (with a housewarming gift tutorial), Martha Goes Green (with the story of a set of recipes for a sweet baby shower) and Sonya Nagels (who interviews recent returnees for Homecomings, looks at an amazing converted hotel in Raglan, and contributes more lovely illustrations).

Joanna Davies looks into what it takes to turn your hobby into a business (and speaks to Felt’s own founder, Lucy Arnold), Ike Levick interviews Pia Jane Bijkerk, Jenn Hadley photographs Olivia Neveu of Lucille and Kate van der Drift snaps Kelly O’Shea & co from Glue Gallery.

As if that wasn’t enough, Extra Curricular also visits Julia Atkinson of Studio Home and compiles the first in their new series of cheat-sheets – this one’s on promotion and marketing.

Printed in full colour with vegetable based inks on recycled stock, Extra Curricular is a pocket-sized treasure trove of inspiration. Order your copy now!

A partygoer’s paper paradise

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

We all know that when it comes to tracking down the right gift, Felt is fabulous. But what about the all-important card and the gorgeous wrapping paper? Well, we’ve got that covered too.

No running around is necessary! On Felt you can get the present and the means to present it perfectly, all from the comfort of home.

But what if, I hear you say, I’m organising the party? Can Felt make my soiree simply superb? Of course! We’ve got stylish invitations galore on Felt (there’s even PDF invitations, like this one from Creative Box, if you’re in a hurry). We can also decorate the venue, provide the gift tags and even make sure the guests are in a party frame of mind!

Autumn on my mind

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

While the hot, dry weather continues for many of us around New Zealand, there’s also been a chill in the air these last few mornings – signaling that Autumn is on its way.

Its warm tones and plentiful harvests provide inspiration for many of our makers. Autumn leaves are a rich theme, and we love the way the tumble of crunchy leaves is almost audible in this Autumnal “Secret Garden” bracelet from Pomare Designs.

gallery

Autumn is also the time of harvest and plenty, a feast for the body and inspiration for the mind of the maker. How about some of these gorgeous needle-felted pumpkins and acorns from Soft Earth Art, in pure New Zealand wool, to decorate your harvest table?

And then there’s that desire to hibernate, snuggling up against the coming winter. Coulter and Coulter‘s beautiful range of up-cycled blankets will keep you snug as a bug in your rug, while many of our other talented makers can dress you up nice and warmly against the coming chill.

Whether we want them to or not, the seasons will change, so join us in an Autumnal celebration.
