Making it crafty in Mapua

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Clever, creative and crafty people from all around Mapua and the Nelson and Bays region are gearing up for the third Mapua Makers Market, a showcase of quality, handmade contemporary craft.

Felt sellers are well-represented at the MMM, and this is just a selection of the sellers you’ll be able to meet on the day.

The Mapua Makers Market is the brainchild of two local artists, who want to establish a market where the emphasis is on the makers and their products (and not on donuts and chips). Following on from two successful markets in 2012, the third Mapua Makers Market will showcase more wonderful makers with an excellent range of handmade goodies, all lovingly created by the person selling them.

Due to renovations, the previous market venue is unavailable so the MMM has upped-sticks and shifted itself to the Old Church on Aranui Road.

Eat, Drink and Be Crafty!

Monday, January 14th, 2013

With two successful fairs under their belt, the Eat, Drink and Be Crafty crew are going for the hat-trick and doing it all again in 2013.

As well as an awesome spread of local crafts, there will be games, great food and craft beers to sample and stock up on. The Life Flight helicopter will also be on site so the kids can check that out too. Sound like a fab day out for the family? We think so!

The market can be found at the beautiful Battle Hill Farm Forest Park, on Paekakariki Hill Road north of Porirua Harbour. With its farm setting, native bush reserve and panoramic views Battle Hill provides a great opportunity to enjoy the open spaces of rural Wellington. The five hundred hectares of Battle Hill are a mix of flat, rolling and steeper hill country, making it a haven for walking, horse riding, mountain biking, camping and picnicking.

Head along to Battle Hill on Saturday 26 January from 10am till 4pm. Admission is free and EFTPOS is available.

Rekindle Wood Collection Day, Christchurch

Rekindle Wood Collection Day, Saturday 11 August, Christchurch
Photographs by Adrian Malloch

Rekindle is a social enterprise that makes furniture and other useful objects by diverting wood from landfill to reuse. In doing so, it creates work opportunities and actively enables youth to gain real and transferable work skills.

Dining chairs and tables for the first Rekindle collection are currently being prototyped and you can see some examples of those above. There’s still a bit of refining to do – adding a few curves, smoothing off a few corners – but I think you’ll agree they look pretty amazing!

So what can you do to support this awesome initiative? You stop the wood going to landfill via the skip/digger/truck, and Rekindle will make it useful, beautiful and extend the life of the wood as long as possible.

Gather up any dry planks of hardwood (i.e. cladding, flooring, tongue and groove) and take them along to the Rekindle Wood Collection site at 272 Worcester Street in Christchurch on Saturday 11 August between 11am and 3.30pm.

The Rekindle Wood Collection Day will enable the collection of wood to complete furniture orders for Christchurch, including making table-tops for C1 Espresso’s re-opening (yaaay, C1 is re-opening!).

Wood will continue to be collected after this date, and deliveries can be made by arrangement with the Rekindle team at info@rekindle.org.nz.
