A Patriotic Call to Yarn

The National Army Museum is seeking the assistance of crafty New Zealanders to produce a memorial of a handcrafted poppy for every person lost by our nation in the Great War – that’s over eighteen thousand poppies.

These very special tributes are being displayed at the National Army Museum in the form of a cascading waterfall of poppies in the Museum’s memorial area.

Currently the museum has received nearly ten thousand poppies, so they’re over half-way to their target of 18,166 poppies. The poppies can be handcrafted in any way (knitted, crocheted, sewn, soft crafted), but they must be a red Flanders style poppy. There are several patterns available to assist contributors.

You can find out more about the project and the history behind it by visiting the National Army Museum website or their Facebook page.

  1. It is really a good thing to do. Even if I came from Russia, my grand parents went to WWII and I know from family members about hardships of any war in any country for any family. I am going to make my humble contribution and send some felted flowers to the museum. I put a link to this article on my facebook page so some of my friends can take part as well.
