Longtime local: the Alfriston Country Market

The Alfriston Country Market is a local institution. Created in mid-1982 to support South Auckland Hospice and Stroke Club, it originally sold ‘now not needed items’. Eventually, it became a Saturday maker market with a wide range of beautifully handcrafted items. Recently their efforts market raised an amazing $3000 to donate to Totara Hospice – well done guys!

We spotted a couple of familiar Felt faces amongst the stallholders…

You’ll also find hand knitting, clothing and accessories for babies and children, felted hats and scarves, jewellery, wooden toys, dolls’ clothes and garden pots, as well as preserves, bread, vegetables, cakes and lovely morning tea – as the organisers put it, anything “made, baked, sown or grown” by the person selling it.

The Alfriston Country Market runs every first Saturday of the month, 8.30am to 12.30pm, at the Alfriston Community Hall, 300 Mill Rd – that’s beside Alfriston School. The next market is on Saturday 6 December, so mark it in your calendars, Aucklanders!
