Otaki Festival of the Wind

Here’s something a bit different – and a really fun day out! Whether you’re a maker or just enjoy a great day at the beach, bring your kites and your sense of fun for the Kapiti Coast’s inaugural Otaki Festival of the Wind.

Exercise your crafty skills to make some kites or other wind powered things, and come along to the free, open-air, eco-friendly fun to be held on Otaki Beach on the Kapiti Coast. Even if you’ve never made a kite before, come and enjoy the creations of other kite makers and learn how to make your own!

Be wowed by every kind of kite imaginable from the giant to the tiny, acrobatic and single line. There’ll be kite buggies and kite surfing as well as every kind of kite – weird and wonderful, traditional Maori and international designs.

Prizes will be given for: best home made kite, best kite made from recycled materials, the kite least likely to fly but flying (we love that one!), best newspaper kite and the people’s choice kite.

A festival for everyone – from kids to grown ups, amateurs to professionals – come and join in the fun. The Kites will be flying from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 9 march, and for those who really get the bug, there’ll be a casual flying day on Sunday as well. There will be classes, workshops and other events leading up to the event and admission on the day is free. Find out more on the Festival’s Facebook page.
