Wishing you a wonderful Christmas

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Now that the mad rush on Felt has abated somewhat, as well as Christmas greetings I have a few huge thank yous to say before everyone heads off to enjoy Christmas lunch and summer holidays.

This year for the first time, Felt has a little team for me to thank! Rose and Marcel have been working hard all year behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. If you’ve sent us a question or comment during the year, chances are Rose has responded to it – she does a great job of fielding all sorts of queries and moderating new listings, of which there have been a lot! Marcel, meanwhile, has been skillfully juggling the day-to-day technical maintenance of Felt with the development of whole lot of cool new stuff that you’ll get to see in the new year. Felt is a hugely complex site and Marcel makes it look easy – aren’t we lucky to have him?

And of course, thank YOU! You are the reason that Felt continues year after year to be an incredible and rewarding experience for me, and I’m so grateful for the ongoing support of this lovely community. Your positive feedback, participation and awesome emails are what provide the inspiration and motivation to make Felt amazing.

Rose, Marcel and I are taking a small break over the Christmas weekend. We’ll finish up at 12pm tomorrow (Christmas Eve) and be back on deck on Monday. It will be business as usual on Felt, and any enquiries you have during the weekend can be sent to enquiries@felt.co.nz to be responded to on Monday. Hopefully you’ll be so busy having a lovely Christmas yourself, you won’t even notice we’re gone!

Have a fabulous Christmas, a happy New Year and a beautiful summer, and from Felt, I wish you all the best for a wonderful 2011.

Not to condone clock-watching, but…

Felt needs YOU!

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Prior to launching our first upgrade in the new year, we need a group of enthusiastic Felt volunteers to help with testing. This is a really important step for us before going live with our changes, and it’s an opportunity for you to get a sneak peek at what’s in store!

Being a tester involves spending several hours on Felt during the period of 17–24 January 2011. You’ll be given access to our testing site along with a list of exercises and will be asked to provide feedback on various aspects of your experience.

As written communication is a large part of this process, good language skills are important. You will also need regular internet access and the ability to print a small number of pages included in the test pack (instructions, exercise list, etc.).

We are looking to engage people across a range of operating systems and browsers, with varying levels of familiarity with Felt. We’d love to hear from you whether you’re a geek or technophobe, Felt guru or newbie, shopper or seller, or anywhere in between. Your feedback will be valued and appreciated by us regardless.

To ensure that we cover as wide a range of users as possible within our test group, we are selecting testers by application. Applications will close at 5pm on Friday 7 January and if selected, you’ll be contacted on Monday 10 January and receive your test pack shortly thereafter.

Summer Silver Retreat, 15–16 January, Hawke’s Bay

Jewellery artists Charmayne Dobbs and Ingrid Schloemer are holding their inaugural Summer Silver Retreat in Haumoana, Hawke’s Bay on 15 and 16 January 2011. Over the two days, they’ll give tuition in the creation of silver jewellery using precious metal clay.

The cost of $275 includes tuition, use of tools, firing service and materials (10g silver plate + wire, 14g silver clay and two cubic zirkonias). A BBQ dinner will also be provided on the Saturday night, and drinks and nibbles will be supplied throughout the weekend.

This is a fabulous opportunity to learn traditional ways of working with metals: sawing, filing, soldering, wire work, using hammers and pliers – as well as learning to work with a new contemporary material, precious metal clay: shaping, sculpting, cutting, sanding, drilling, setting stones, polishing, and maybe create some filigree work.

Places are limited to 12 people, to allow Charmayne and Ingrid to work closely with each student. You will be working in a group of six with one of the artists, and swap the following day to learn with the other. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends, and I can personally vouch for it being a lot of fun!

A creative weekend in beautiful Hawke’s Bay would also make an amazing Christmas present for a crafty person – Ingrid will happily supply a printable voucher to give on Christmas Day. Secure a place at the Summer Silver Retreat now!

A Happy New Year and a Happy New Felt!

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

What a year it’s been! In 2010 we attended the fabulous Craft 2.0, Fruit Bowl Craft Jam, A Craft Affair and A Craft Christmas Market, survived a mag 7.1 earthquake and reached 13,000 users. Visits per day trebled, Felt’s growth rate increased by 150% and we saw thousands of exciting new handmade products listed by awesome makers from all over the country. Felt was also a finalist for Best Trading Site in the Net Guide Web Awards.

While all this was going on we’ve been hard at work in the background, coming up with new ways to improve the site. I’m excited to announce that we’re just about ready to reveal the fruits of our labour.

In 2011 you’ll see some changes on Felt. Specifically, we’re focusing on how we can make it easier for you to use the site, whether you’re a seller, a buyer or simply a browser. Starting with a wee bit of a makeover, we’ll be improving some existing features, introducing a few cool new bits and paving the way for exciting new features further down the track.

Your feedback and support in getting to this point has been invaluable and I’m really looking forward to sharing these improvements with you. The new year is going to be an exciting one – watch this space!

I always think it’s super cool when the powers of two awesome Felt makers combine to create a whole new product, and this wee package deal is a lovely example. Gorgeous moisture-rich handmade soap by Honeynspice served up on a stylish ceramic soap dish by MudbirdNZ makes a beautiful gift or a treat for yourself.

Gummi bling!

The expression “good enough to eat” was never so apt – the only drawback to gummi bear jewellery that I can see is the inevitable temptation to take a furtive lick when nobody’s looking. These colourful wee sweeties by Jellybones are made from hand cast resin and hang on a 60cm silver plated chain.
