Featured Seller: Rose in Thorns

Monday, November 30th, 2009

By day Rose Wells works as a graphic designer in Christchurch – by night she is Rose Among Thorns, candle-maker and crafter extraordinaire. From recycling old convent candles to testing out new scent options on her friends and colleagues, Rose is full of ideas and always has something on the go.

What do you make?
Currently I make candles in unique shapes and styles, and purses made from crocheted
recycled cassette tape. I have made many crafty things in my time, and have plans to add more
things to my range.

Your favourite materials, tools and processes?
I enjoy the whole process: thinking of an idea, figuring out how to make it, trying it out, making adjustments and then getting it right. Not perfect though, I’m not a machine!

What inspires you?
Challenging myself to find uses for things that might otherwise be thrown away.
I like to see what other crafty people are doing.
The internet is a great tool for seeing all the cool things other people do.
Pretty things.

Is there a philosophy behind your work?
There is an underlying theme of recycling. I don’t like throwing things into landfill, so I try to think of ways to use things that can’t go in the recycling bin. Some may call this hoarding… but it’s not if I actually make it into something… right?

roseinthorns_main

Describe your workspace:
My candle making is done in the garage, because it gets a bit messy. Currently there are lots of boxes of old candles to be recycled, and all my other bits and pieces I need. It also includes a car, a couple of bikes, and other garage type stuff. My other workspace for less messy activities is the spare room upstairs. It gets lots of afternoon sun, and when I’ve finished recovering my couch for the second time, it will be a great spot to sit while I dream up new things to make.

Five words that describe your mind:
Complex, analytical, intuitive, observant, optimistic. I go against the grain by being good with numbers!

What’s your earliest or most vivid craft-related memory?
I learnt crafts at an early age, so can’t identify the earliest memory. However I recall my mother teaching me things like sewing, knitting, spinning and weaving. She also taught me crochet, but I wasn’t very good at it, so asked her to teach me again last Christmas. I’m a lot better at it this time round!

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve always been a bit of a fan of dance music, and it seems to be back in at the moment, so I’m liking that. I find upbeat music energising.

Recommend an album: In Ghost Colours by Cut Copy

Your favourite childhood book?
I read a lot of books as a child, so don’t have a stand out favourite. However I think I read all of Roald Dahl’s books, and a good quantity of Enid Blyton’s as well.

What are you reading now? The last book I read was Mansfield Park by Jane Austen.

If you were a crayon, what colour would you be? Red

hjrddesign

What do you get when you cross a background in Communication Design with the arrival of a little one to entertain and educate? Gorgeous magnetic wallscapes by Dunedin-based hjrd Design, which are now available on Felt!

“My recent design projects have evolved from a transition from working professional to new parent where our space is shared with the delightful chaos of a growing child. I wanted to design something halfway between art and play for rooms in our home.”

Inspired by a love of all things natural and nostalgia for the simplicity and wonder of childhood, each magnet set is unique, made by hand from scraps of wallpaper, wrapping paper, pre-loved buttons and other thrifted materials.

They’re designed to be interactive and feed the imagination, and can be used on any metallic surface. Walls painted with magnetic paint provide the perfect blank canvas. These are a fabulous Christmas gift idea or stocking stuffer and are available from hjrd Design on Felt.

This weekend is the grand finale of Oamaru’s 2009 Victorian Heritage Celebrations, the Victorian Fete!

From 10am till 4pm on Sunday 22 November, Oamaru’s Historic Precinct will be transformed with market stalls, music, traditional craft demonstrations, penny farthings and street theatre – the sights and sounds of an authentic Victorian Fete.

I’m heading down for the weekend with Mel from Black Swan Designs, and we’ll be at the Fete in all our Victorian finery (that’s us trying on our outfits in the photos above) so if you’re in town, drop by and say hello!

Extra Curricular – issue 1 now available on Felt

extracurricular.felt.co.nz

Extra Curricular is a brand new New Zealand publication dedicated to showcasing people who do interesting creative projects in their spare time as well as encouraging those who wish they did.

Whether they have a 9-5 job, a fledgling business or a young family, the people profiled in Extra Curricular are connected by their passion for keeping the right side of the brain active in their off-hours. They do it for the love of it – driven by a creative urge, they stay up late and work weekends in order to complete their latest side project, whether that’s a new T-shirt design, vandalising an old landscape print or embroidering a picture of Helen Clark.

As well as having fab content, Extra Curricular is beautifully designed and printed in full colour on gorgeous recycled stock, so it’s a lovely collectible publication as well.

The first issue is being launched tomorrow (Thursday 19 November) with a celebration at DOC on K Road in central Auckland, so if you’re in the neighbourhood, head along from 7pm, meet Ellie and pick up your very own copy of Extra Curricular. Rumour has it there will be cupcakes too!

Extra Curricular is also available on Felt – place your order now, there’s a limited number and my guess is they’ll sell fast!

What do you make?
Pretty much anything I can get my little hands on. But at the moment I’m really getting into
my lino prints.

Your favorite materials, tools and processes?
Yummy acid-free papers, lino, carving tools, my press, ink, quality acrylics. Most of all
I love pens and graphite.

What inspires you?
I adore line, comic & tattoo illustration, Japanese prints, Carl Larson, Arts and Craft movement, old packaging and old books.

Is there a philosophy behind your work?
Yes I believe greatly that beautifully designed art and craft should be available to all, and everywhere throughout the home, but not at the expense of the artist or crafts-person. Illustration (in all it’s forms) is one way of achieving this.
